Kim & Scott’s Cafe Twist Review

While my family was in Chicago for the Midwest Moms Media Brands & Bloggers Summit a couple weeks ago we were able to enjoy a nice lunch at Kim & Scott’s Cafe Twist.  You may remember the review I did about Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels.  We’ve been enjoying their pretzels ever since we opened the first box so when I learned they had a cafe in Chicago it was added to our “Must Visit” list.

The cafe is located outside of the downtown area so it’s a lot slower-paced and quieter.  It seemed like a rather nice area from what we saw while we were driving through.  When we arrived at the cafe we were surprised to see that there was ample parking (metered) available on both sides of the street.  We were there at lunchtime on a Sunday so it could be that other times/days are busier, but I’m thinking a lot of people walk because there are several residential areas nearby.

The outside and inside of the cafe were both very clean and cute.  There was a short line when we walked in but it moved pretty quickly.  The manager on duty came out to greet us and told us about Scott’s latest creation, the Crave Bar.  More on that later in this post ;)

While standing in line we had a chance to look around the cafe.  I noticed this on the wall:

When it came time to order I had trouble!  So many things on the menu sounded so good!  I ended up choosing the Pepperoni Pizza Pretzel Sandwich – all-natural pepperoni & mozzarella cheese on their Pizza Stuffed Pretzel.  Jake chose the Roast Beef Pretzel Sandwich Combo – all-natural Boars Head roast beef, creamy horseradish sauce & roasted red peppers on an Herb & Cream Cheese Stuffed Pretzel.

After placing our order we sat down and one of the workers brought our food out to us.  I thought that was really nice and it made the whole experience a little more personal and less like a “fast food” type restaurant.

Since Jake got the combo he also had potato chips and a drink that we shared.  I absolutely LOVED my sandwich, which was no surprise.  After all, the Pizza Stuffed Pretzel is my favorite one!  The sandwich was pretty filling since it was made with a full sized stuffed pretzel instead of just bread.  Jake really liked his sandwich as well and was still talking about how full he felt a couple hours later!

After we finished our sandwiches it was time for desert!  When I saw and heard about the new Crave Bar I just knew we’d have to try one!  It’s made with premium vanilla ice cream coated in dark chocolate with crunch pretzel pieces.  There’s also sea salt on the outside and a chocolate covered crunchy gourmet pretzel rod in place of a stick.  Mmmm, it was delicious!  I just wished it had been a little bit larger.

All of the food also passed the very strict Carter test.  Carter enjoyed cheese from my sandwich, a potato chip or two, and several bites of chocolate from the Crave Bar :)

We definitely enjoyed everything about Kim & Scott’s Cafe Twist.  I really wish there was one in our area so that we could enjoy it on a regular basis!  But I’ll continue enjoying their pretzels until the next time we’re in Chicago.

Cafe Twist is located at 2218 North Lincoln Avenue.  They offer catering and delivery (to select areas).  The manager informed us that they are preparing to make their menu even better so stop by and pay them a visit if you’re in the area!  You won’t regret it :)

You can also find Kim & Scott’s on Twitter and Facebook.

Midwest Moms Media Brands & Bloggers Summit Recap

Midwest Moms Media - Brands and Bloggers Summit

As some of you may know, I attended the Midwest Moms Media Brands & Bloggers Summit in Chicago this past Saturday.  It was tons of fun!  I absolutely loved getting to meet the awesome people behind some of the blogs I enjoy!

From left to right this is Xenia from Thanks, Mail Carrier, me, Kelly from Kelly’s Lucky You and Melissa from The Life of a Sippy Cup Mom.  I love these ladies!

I absolutely couldn’t wait to share some of the valuable information with all of you!  Today I’m going to do a quick recap of some of my favorite points.  There will also be a post coming later this week with some awesome tips about video blogging!  So make sure to stop back by!  Video blogging was discussed repeatedly at the conference, so it’s definitely an important topic.

One of the speakers that really sticks out in my mind is Connie Burke from GMC.  Connie talked a lot about building relationships with brands, not working with them once and never hearing from them again.  She said “this is not a one night stand.”  Connie also explained that she doesn’t pick bloggers to work with based solely on numbers, “it’s not a popularity contest.”  I wish that every PR person I work with felt the same way as Connie.  She asked us to raise our hands if we’ve ever worked with a brand and never heard from them again and so many of us in that room raised our hands.  I want to work with brands on an ongoing basis, and Connie believes in that too!  Her words were so refreshing to hear and it made me feel good knowing that there are people out there like her that are working with bloggers.

The beautiful GMC Acadia that Connie Burke brought to show us!

I also loved Meagan Francis from The Happiest Mom.  Meagan talked a lot about being responsible for our brand.  She said “I’m marketing, I’m editorial, I’m everything!”  It really made me think about all the different aspects of running a blog and reminded me that I’m in charge of all of it!  Meagan talked about staying true to yourself and your brand and said “I should totally care who’s in my sidebar.”  That’s the truth!  Every ad, post and link on our blog reflects who we are and we shouldn’t take that lightly.  Meagan also gave an awesome tip for finding brands’ PR contacts – look up their press releases, there’s usually a name at the bottom and an email address.  This is one thing I’ve never tried before but definitely will in the future!

Another great tip came from Stephanie Precourt from Adventures in Babywearing.  She said that it’s always a good idea to do a quick search for the name of the brand and “controversy” before deciding to work with them.  This helps you to make more educated decisions about who you decide to work with and makes sure you’re not going to attach your name to a brand that has a tainted reputation.

Wendy Piersall was another member of the panel.  She recently wrote the book Mom Blogging for Dummies.  I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on this book!  I’m so excited :)  Wendy did a wonderful job of explaining the thought process of some brands that we might pitch.  She said “in their world dollars equal results.”  For example, a brand may be used to pitches that cost $200,000 so when they see a bloggers little $200 pitch they may be confused and wonder “what’s the catch?” or think it’s not worth their time.  Wendy told us to make sure to know our own worth and understand that our time is valuable!  Not that we can go out and pitch a company for $200,000, but just make sure to value yourself and your work

We also heard from Sarah Evans about the FTC disclosure policies and how they apply to bloggers.  She explained that the FTC isn’t out to catch every single little thing that we do wrong, but is more focused on catching bloggers who have deceptive practices.  One thing she pointed out that I definitely need to improve on, is the need for disclosures in tweets and Facebook updates.  The hashtag #spon will cover disclosures on Twitter (and I’m assuming the same abbreviation can be used in Facebook updates as well).  You can see her entire presentation on the FTC guidelines here

So that was my super quick recap.  I really wish I could’ve taken a video of the entire conference so I could remember every word!  Trying to take notes, tweet and listen at the same time isn’t always the easiest thing to do!  Of course, all of the speakers were awesome, not just the ones I chose to mention here.  I had a great time and am so happy to have my first blog conference under my belt!

Best Western Plus River North Hotel – Chicago

It’s official, I will be staying at the Best Western Plus River North Hotel in Chicago while there for the Midwest Moms Media Brands & Bloggers Summit in July.  I absolutely cannot wait, I’m so excited!  They are located downtown and just finished a million dollar renovation!

My good friend Melissa from The Life of a Sippy Cup Mom let me know that the Best Western Plus River North Hotel would be giving bloggers a special discounted rate for the summit (contact her for details).  This is what first prompted my interest in this hotel.  Soon after, I started following them on Facebook and have been so impressed with everything I’ve seen there.  Their guests seem to be super happy during their stays, and they interact wonderfully with their Facebook followers.  They even do Tuesday Trivia each week where you can win a prize for answering a question on their page, how fun!

Jake, Carter and I will all be making the trip to Chicago for the summit, so we’ll be staying a couple extra days to enjoy some other activities as well.  I really love Chicago and since we moved back down to Indianapolis we are so much further and can’t just make a day trip anymore.  One thing I don’t love is how expensive parking can get.  Which is why I’m so glad that the Best Western Plus River North Hotel has FREE parking for their guests!  I also can’t wait to enjoy their indoor heated swimming pool

The week of Earth Day they posted some different information about the hotel that made me even more glad that I’ll be staying there!  Here are a few tidbits:

  • Our Eco Fresh bath amenities are packaged in biodegradable materials to keep you AND the Earth feeling fresh and clean!
  • We have water conservation equipment and a linen reuse program to conserve water.
  • You’re not the only one to enjoy that complimentary newspaper each morning.  We donate those papers to The Anti-Cruelty Society who use them to help keep cats and dogs happy!
  • All unused personal products from our hotel don’t end up in a landfill, they end up where someone can use them.  Our partner Bin Donated is a donation pick-up service that collects and provides donated items to existing charities.

As if that’s not enough, The Best Western Plus River North Hotel is holding an Open Books book drive right now to give RML Specialty Hospital a case of books.

I feel truly privileged that my family will be spending time in this awesome hotel in a few months.  Oh, and no worries, I’ll be sure to tell (and show you) all about it when I get back :)
